The Emperors New Groove - Character Design

One of my favorite things about this film is also one that really surprised me at first; the aesthetic is very contradictory to Disney's aesthetic although it is a Disney film. Disney had established a soft, round and sweet aesthetic (which did take a turn with 101 Dalmations and Sleeping Beauty) but never like The Emperor's New Groove.

Take a loof at these early drawings of the characters:

They do look very similar to many other Disney films. They bare a resemblance to the art of Hercules (which was quite exaggerated but still played it somewhat safe.)

Now take a look at these character sheets in the late stages of pre-production:

These designs are a lot more exaggerated and pushed past their limits in comparison to any other Disney film I have ever seen.

In the final film, the characters are even more comically exaggerated adding to the hugely satirical theme of the film.
