The background art for Song of the Sea very clearly reflected the Celtic mythology that the animated film was based on. The objects in the background are very detailed and covered in soft patterns. These patters are very similar to traditional Celtic art:
The elements found in Celtic patterns (winding and twisting bands, the cyclical designs and even the color palette) are also found in the backgrounds of song of the sea. Notice the glowing Teal in the image above which is a reoccurring element in the film, especially in the scenes involving water.
There is another element in the backgrounds that adds something unique to this film in comparison to most other animated films and that is that there is little to no perspective in the film. This makes the entire film feel more like a storybook which highlights the mythological underpinning as well as emphasizes the role of children and childhood within the story.
