Identify - Dimanche

Dimanche is a short animated film about a young boy on a typical Sunday, following his parents to church, then to dinner and being quite bored of it all. This Canadian film by Patrick Doyon is an animated film I appreciate as an Illustrator as well as an Animator. The character and background designs remind me that of the illustrations of Saul Steinberg. Not a lot is said during the film, just a lot of mumbling from the adults, squawking from the crows, and the occasional sigh from the little boy. I find the atmosphere of this film to be subtle, delicate and simple but incredibly relatable.

I absolutely adore the design of the crows as well as the way that they move. It is unique from any other animation I have seen. A clever little comparison Doyon makes is when he compares the senseless squawking of the crows to the senseless squawking of the adults. The film is taken from the perspective of the little boy and this comparison tells us how bored he is of spending his Sunday afternoon with a bunch of squawking adults.

This little scene by the door is one of many that reminds me of Saul Steinberg’s illustrations. The many shoes by the door that are almost the size of the boy inspires nostalgia as the audience inevitably recalls their own childhood.

Here is the film. It is one of my favourite Animations, enjoy:
