Telling Stories - Storyboards - Paperman

I am in love with this animated short. There are so many aspects of it that move and inspire me. The character design, the camera shots and especially the colour palette (all of which are discussed in my PPP blog, because I couldn't help myself.) Here are a few storyboard excerpts that really caught my attention.

First of all, paper edit: with a storyline like this one, I imagine there is a lot of flexibility with the sequence of events. Who looked first? Who flirted? Who chased who? And with the paper edit method, all of those elements of the story can be shifted around to find the storyline that fits well.

I really like this action shot. It is clear exactly what is happening: It is windy because there are objects in the air seemingly moving to the right and upwards. Why? Because the coats of the figures are evidencing that movement as well as one man holding his hat down while another reaches for his, and the woman taking notice that her's blew off.

This shot illustrated the situation the male character is in: there is a vast sea of strangers to get through, as well as intense wind (evidenced by the frantic paper airplanes). The camera holds its position right behind the male character at eye level so we can see everything from his perspective.

This shot reenforces the shot above. This time, the camera is tilted to illustrate the intensity of the wind.

These two panels are absolutely brilliant! In the first panel, we can see the character smushed and trapped between two figures. His body is squashed to show anticipation. In the second panel, his body is completely stretched forward showing the anticipated action.
