Telling Stories - Storyboards - Flushed Away

Another rodent film! This is becoming a habit. I found a lot of storyboard content for Flushed away and I was really impressed with the illustration of action and movement. The lines that accompany the characters bodies through movement were very descriptive and accomplished the work of 1 or 2 bullet notes under the panel. These storyboards are by Nassos Vakalis.

What I like about this particular excerpt are the action shots involving the female rat. Each action is illustrated in about 2 panels demonstrating how she's getting 'there' and how she got 'there'. My mind fills in the blanks and I think that's very elegant and clever.

The other thing I adore about this is the very bottom left hand panel showing the male rat helplessly and awkwardly on the ground completely terrified of what just happened and completely under the control of the female rate. I think all of this is reenforced by the high angle shot.

What I really like here is the series of vertical and horizontal swoops following the character. These lines bring us to two conclusions; one is that the character is moving forward very quickly and the other is that her hands are losing stability which is demonstrated by the vertical lines by her forearms.

Here is another excellent example of the illustration of motion through the use of gesture lines. Between these two panels, it's pretty clear what is going on: the character is trying to balance himself, most like on something narrow. We can assume he is trying to balance himself because his arms are creating a circular motion (demonstrated by the circular marks by his hands). We can also assume that he is balancing on something narrow because his base isn't moving.

Nassos Vakalis is an incredibly talented storyboard artist!
